Senior Insurance Discount 'Driver Training' Programs

Improve your driving skills, and if you're 55 or older, get a discount on your personal auto insurance! The Defensive Driving Course teaches basic crash prevention techniques and has a proven record of reducing traffic violations and incidents. It's taught by experienced, traffic safety instructors, including current and former law enforcement. The class consists of lecture, films and discussions. There is no behind-the-wheel driving.
 
According to Minnesota state law, people aged 55 and older who complete a 4-hour state-approved defensive driving course are eligible to receive a 10%, three-year discount on auto insurance. This includes in-person classroom, online, and live virtual Zoom training. Contact your insurance agent for details. After you complete the course, you will receive a certificate of completion to give to your insurance company.

If you would like defensive driver training now, online training options are currently available for both the 8-hour and 4-hour courses.

NSC Senior Defensive Driving Course

Effective July 1, 2024, the 4-hour defensive driving program can be taken for the initial and the refresher courses. See note below. 

Any driver aged 55 and older can take this course to receive a 10%, three-year discount on auto insurance.

NOTE: During the 2024 legislative session, a change was made to the Accident Prevention Course Rule. Effective July 1, 2024, the new rule states that the course must be a total of at least 4 hours. This means that a first-time participant can take a 4-hour program as their initial training the 8-hour program will no longer be a requirement. 8-hour classes will not be offered with a live instructor, but if you would like to take the 8-hour program it will still be available online.
